Lessons from a midwife

Here, see today in a new way,

shades of grey.

No right or wrong, just shifting shapes and shades of light.

There are consequences to your every action.

There is a logical and knee jerk reaction.

The one process you can control, the other you can’t…

until you stand there just breathing.

At first it takes all your attention just to stand there,

doing what most do naturally.

With time, this doesn’t take all of your effort,

you can learn to do many things at once,

you may even be so successful as to,

work your way through and on into another reaction,

one that over-rides that knee jerk action.

It is then that you are free, but only until,

some other trigger comes along, of which you were unaware.

It stops you in your tracks and that work begins all over again.

You stand there simply breathing.

A midwife taught you the most valuable lesson of all,

bent over a fussy irritable woman with threatened pre-term labour.

On the topic of emotional exacerbation of the sensation of pain:

Her instructions were simple,

Learn to let go,

Let go of the pain, of all you cannot control.

Life unfolds beautifully on its own with no over-thinking on your part at all.
